Allegations of Penan girls and women being raped and molested by timber company workers in the Baram district in Sarawak have been confi rmed to be true.

A special committee set up by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry revealed that at least seven girls and women were raped and molested - confi rming a news report by The Star late last year.

The horror the Penan girls and women went through.

● A girl, 12, was raped by a stranger outside her hostel and by a timber worker when she took a lift in a timber company’s vehicle from her village in Long Kawi to her school in Long Lama. She got pregnant, quit school and married a Penan man.

● A woman from Long Item was raped by a timber worker in 2005 and 2007 and gave birth to a baby girl, now two years old.

● One was raped by an Iban timber worker when she was kidnapped at the age of 13, while visiting her relatives in Miri.

● One was almost raped when she took a lift with her father from a timber company to apply for an identity card.

● In Long Muboi, a student said her 14-year-old friend was molested by a truck driver who gave her a lift to school.

● A 17-year-old girl gave birth to a child and her neighbours claimed that she had sexual relations with the timber workers.

● A group of women said they believed that sex exploitation exists among the Penan women and girls but they were too ashamed to tell their stories.

Police say they would not be able to nail the loggers who raped and sexually abused Penan women and girls in timber concession zones despite a government report that confirmed these crimes -- not unless they get detailed information.

The Women and Family Affairs Ministry has confirmed that these crimes -- first uncovered by the Bruno Manser Fund on its website, then highlighted by local media -- had taken place, but police said they need detailed information that can lead them to these rapists.

The head of the Criminal Investigation Department in Sarawak, Senior Asst Comm 2 Huzir Mohamed, told The Star on Thursday that the police need more detailed and specific information like names, dates and places. More on TheStar

6 Cow-Head Protesters Charged With Sedition

Six people who took part in the "cow's head" demonstration in front of the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah building here last month were charged with sedition in the Sessions Court here on Wednesday.

They are Ahmad Mahayuddin Abd Manaf, 36, Ibrahim Sabri, 43, Eyzva Ezhar Ramly, 31, Mohd Azmir Mohd Zain, 35, Ahmad Suhairy Zakaria, 30, and Mohd Hilmi Ni, 40.

They pleaded not guilty and asked to be tried when the charges were read out to them separately before Judge Hasbi Hasan.

Ibrahim and Ahmad Mahayuddin are charged with stepping on the cow's head, Eyzva Ezhar with bringing the cow's head, while Mohd Azmir, Ahmad Suhairy and Mohd Hilmi, with bringing the cow's head and stepping on it in the illegal assembly.

Muslim NGO to Defend Cow Head Protestors

Malay non-governmental organisation Perkasa wants to provide legal counsel to the 12 “cow head protestors” who were charged with sedition and illegal assembly at the Shah Alam Sessions and Magistrates courts on Wednesday.

Its president Datuk Ibrahim Ali said several lawyer members of the movement were willing to take up the case as a “jihad,” or any war undertaken in the name of Islam against unbelievers or backsliders.

“We will also go on a donation drive to help them financially to pay for unforeseen expenses that they might incur during the trial proper.

“We are not doing this as a publicity stunt or political mileage but for the sake of the Ummah (the community of believers) and to defend Allah’s religion,” he said in a press statement issued here on Wednesday.

Ibrahim, who is also the independent Member of Parliament for Pasir Mas, criticised those in power, accusing them of being cowards for not protecting the religion.

However, many Muslim and political leaders have condemned the incident (see below), saying such hatred and disrespect had no place in the religion.

On Aug 28, some 50 people, led by residents of Section 23 in Shah Alam, marched about 300m from the state mosque to the gates of the Selangor state secretariat building to protest against the relocation of the Sri Mahamariamman temple from Section 19 to Section 21.

They dragged along a decapitated cow’s head then proceeded to stamp and spit on it.

They also warned of further action if the temple was built in their area, with one protest leader promising bloodshed.- TheStar

Police arrest 15 others in aborted candlelight vigil

Police have arrested 16 people including Human Rights Party leader P. Uthayakumar as they were attempting to march from Masjed Jamek to Dataran Merdeka here tonight for a candlelight vigil protesting last week’s cow-head demonstration by Section 23 residents in Shah Alam.

Authorities had closed off access to the square to prevent the group of about 50 demonstrators from carrying out the vigil.

The group first gathered near Central Market at about 7.30 pm and made their way towards the Masjid Jamek LRT station where they started lighting candles and distributing placards to supporters.

The placards read “Threat and insulting the religion of others is condoned by the government, where is justice?” and “Umno must repent”.

The group’s message echoed those of Pakatan Rakyat leaders, who believe the racially charged cow- head protest was instigated by Umno, the dominant party in the ruling Barisan Nasional.

As they marched towards Dataran Merdeka, Uthayakumar and Hindraf coordinator S. Jayathas led the march with songs as others followed them.

The singing didn’t last long as police soon moved in to detain the protesters, among them Uthayakumar’s fiancée S. Indradevi, despite the group heeding police orders to disperse and leave the area.

Also arrested were Hindraf leader and Uthayakumar’s brother P. Waytha Moorthy’s wife and sister.

Uthayakumar, who recently returned from medical treatment abroad, was seen manhandled by the police despite not resisting while his fiancée was roughly pushed and dragged into the police truck.

All 16 were later taken to the Dang Wangi police station to have their statement taken.

In a statement from his London base, Waytha Moorthy said he was appalled by the arrests, saying it was a deliberate and calculated attempt to target the main leaders of Hindraf so that the planned candle vigil would be foiled.

“Those vigil participants were going with candles and roses when they were arrested. PM Najib’s 1 Malaysia is a shame to all democracy-loving Malaysians.

“It is ridiculous that the Muslim extremist cow head protesters – with blood still dripping from the head – who behaved in violent manner, delivered fiery speeches promoting racial hatred and insulted Hindus were given full police protection whilst Hindraf supporters who were armed with unlit candles and roses were violently arrested, bundled and taken into police lock ups,” said Waytha Moorthy who lives in self-exile.

He branded the government and police as fascists who did not have any respect for the Federal Constitution, which provides for freedom of assembly, equality and freedom of religion.

In last week’s protest in Shah Alam, around 50 residents from Section 23 marched towards the Selangor state secretariat building after Friday prayers to protest the planned relocation of a Hindu temple to their housing area.

The protesters brandished a severed cow’s head during the protest, which was observed by the police. No arrests were made then or since.

Today, Selangor mentri besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim announced the relocation will now be temporarily put on hold, following an abortive Shah Alam town hall meeting called this morning to discuss the growing controversy.

Federal govt considers offering another site for temple

Both the Federal and Selangor governments are separately scrambling to contain the fallout from last Friday’s cow-head protest held by a group who oppose a plan to relocate a 150-year-old Hindu Temple to Section 23 here.

While the state government is hosting a dialogue session with all residents this Saturday, the Barisan Nasional (BN) federal government is also considering holding an event to bring both Muslims and Hindus together to defuse racial tension.

The plan, which entailed roping in the assistance of Hindu Sangam, was proposed to the Cabinet by Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Noh Omar, who is also the Umno state deputy liaison chief.

According to sources, the Cabinet is also considering offering an alternative site to relocate the Hindu temple despite the fact that such matters fall under the jurisdiction of the state government.

The Malaysian Insider understands that Noh was forced to defend himself at the Cabinet meeting yesterday. He told the meeting that he did not instigate the Malay-Muslims of Section 23 to protest against the temple relocation.

He is understood to have also told the Cabinet that he would organise a sit-down with Hindus and Muslims in the neighbourhood.

However Hindu Sangam president RS Mohan Shahmugam today told The Malaysian Insider they have had no official invitation yet to meet the federal government about the issue.

Hindu Sangam also believes the proposed site in Section 23 is the best area to relocate the temple.

Mohan said the temple was not meant to cater only to the Hindus from Section 23 but also from Sections 19, 20, 21 and 22.

Together there are at least 3,000 Hindus in these areas, Mohan said, adding the issue of relocating the temple from its current site in Section 19, had been pending for the last two decades.

The current temple was once part of Sungai Garing Estate, but over the years the Selangor Development Corporation (PKNS) had developed the areas surrounding the site into a housing estate.

The temple now lies in the middle of a Muslim-majority area and there had been no concrete effort to relocate until recently.

“This is not a new problem and I don’t understand why the small group of residents needed to protest in such a manner,” Mohan said.

Mohan said that carrying the head of a cow which is scared to Hindus was insulting and called on the government to take action against the culprits.

He also denied claims made yesterday by Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein that residents of Section 23 had met Hindu Sangam to resolve the relocation issue.

“I have checked and there was no such meeting.”

However Mohan said he would welcome a meeting with the minister.

Meanwhile Hindu residents of Section 23 today also denied press reports that they also did not want the temple to be relocated to the area.

K. Raju said one third of all residents in Section 23 were Non-Malays and they have carried out a signature campaign to support the state government’s move to relocate the temple.

He also disputed claims in the press that the cow’s head used during the protest was brought to the scene by outsiders.

“The people who carried the head are Umno members, from Section 23, and they seem to be above the law.”

He added the protest was politically motivated.

She is set to become the first woman in the Southeast Asian country to be caned for drinking alcohol in public. A mother of two, Kartika was arrested from a hotel lounge in 2008. Now she will be lashed six times. Kartika insisted that her sentence be carried out in public.

Model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, who was scheduled to be caned this week for drinking beer, has been released temporarily as it is not advisable for the sentence to be meted out during the fasting month.

Every person’s life is like a kaleidoscope. Some pick up another’s life, hold it to the light and all the glass chips fall this way or that. And the person sighting through the cylinder puts it down and turns away, saying they’ve seen it all, when in fact, they’ve only seen one facet, one pattern in another’s life. Thus some remember only one thing or two about the life of another long lived.

But there are other ways to see most of a life in depth, that is, to keep turning the kaleidoscope, letting the glass shards open and reveal, shade and hide, depending on the turn of the scope. Adding up all the patterns, keeping the sum of the brilliant and the dark turns: that’s a view in depth of the life of another.

I’d just lay out a few turns of the kaleidoscope of Ted Kennedy’s life here, a lost story:

Some of the glass shards part, and we see in paradoxically jeweled light that Ted Kennedy was born to a brutally ambitious father, Joe Kennedy, and his mother Rose, was a good Catholic girl, demure and subservient to her wealthy, bellowing husband.

Just as she predicted, beach volleyball star Kerri Walsh got the itch to play by December. Never mind she was four months pregnant. The sand beckoned.

"I really thought I'd give it a full year off, but it's been such a long time off, and it's been good for my head and good for my soul, and I'm ready," she said, her son bouncing on her knee and husband Casey Jennings competing on a court nearby.

Less than three months after Walsh, 30, gave birth to Joseph Michael Jennings on May 22, she will return to competition at the Hermosa Beach Open, which begins today. Walsh last competed in Dubai in November 2008 with Nicole Branagh. I come not to criticize or praise Michael Beasley, but to empathize with him.
Yahoo Sports is reporting the former Kansas State basketball star, now a member of the NBA Miami Heat, is being treated for depression-related issues at a Houston rehabilitation facility. The Associated Press is reporting the same contention.

When I read those accounts today, I wanted to throw up.

Why?

Because I’ve been there. Three years ago, I spent a night in a psychiatric care facility under observation for depression.

It may have been the worst night of my life. They took my shoestrings, my belt. Informed doctors and nurses take depression seriously. I felt exactly how Beasley apparently felt when he left a cry for help on an Internet account:

"Feelin like it's not worth livin!!!!!!! I'm done" and "I feel like the whole world is against me. I can't win for losin’.”

It doesn’t matter why you feel that low. It matters only that you do. And trust me, you do.

I spent only the one night under lock and key, of my own volition. I spent several weeks in day-long group therapy sessions and it is those sessions that I honestly will tell you saved my life.

My last day of group therapy, I told my fellow sufferers that I would carry a part of each of them around with me for the rest of my life. The part that helped me gain perspective again.

It is why I’m sharing my experience. I was helped off a ledge by others sharing their experiences with me.

I don’t begin to know a thing about what demons are chasing Michael Beasley, if indeed there are any. Depression’s causes and symptoms are as varied as the different people you’ll meet walking down the street.

Some depressives are alcoholics or drug addicts. Many, like me, are not.
For me, depression was - and on some days still can be - measured by the certainty that beneath my feet, just under the ground upon which I stand, lurks a deep, dark lake knowing no horizon.

Its surface is not ruffled by waves, or even a ripple. But to descend into the dark’s caress is to give up all hope. Loss of hope, I contend, beggars the loss of life.
If Michael Beasley is teetering over that abyss, then I pray he receives the help I received. I pray we let him seek that with the understanding I was granted by people at The Kansas City Star, by family, by friends.

It is the least we all could do.

It's a big day in the baby department for women whose names start with K and have shows on E!.

Wednesday afternoon, Kendra Wilkinson, the former "Girl Next Door" and current star of her own show on the cable channel, took to her blog to inform the world that she and husband Hank Baskett are having a boy. Or, as she put it, "Hank and I are having a baby boy!!!!!!!!!!!!"

A few minutes after that, an e-mail blast from E! arrived announcing that Kourtney Kardashian, of the soon-to-premiere "Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami," is pregnant.
Wilkinson revealed to the world in June that she and Baskett, who were married on June 27, were expecting their first child. She took to the Internet just moments after finding out the baby's gender to tell everyone else.

As for Kardashian, she's keeping quiet about the details of her pregnancy, even to the online arm of the network where her show airs. She's not revealing who the father is or when she's due. News from zap2it

Cameron Douglas' girlfriend, Kelly Sott, was busted yesterday for trying to smuggle the accused meth dealer some heroin while he was in a courtroom.

We can't decide if this is disturbing, pathetic, hilarious or all three.

Cops say Kelly Sott was caught trying to pass an electric toothbrush to Cameron Douglas. One that happened to be stuffed with dime bags of heroin, of course.

This took place in a conference room in a federal courthouse in New York City, according to NBC New York, and Sott was taken into custody by police.

Cameron was in court facing charges from his crystal meth bust.

The DEA believes he's been slingin' meth over the last few years. Officials say they busted the 30-year-old after a prolonged sting and that he is not small time.

He is accused of being a well-oiled drug machine, selling methamphetamine between New York and L.A., delivering the addictive substance in person, or via Fed Ex from a California hotel, according to the criminal complaint. - News from Hollywood Gossip

Andaman Islands - Earthquake

A huge 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the Andaman Islands in the Indian Ocean on Tuesday, triggering panic as people fled their homes amid initial warnings of a possible tsunami.

A tsunami alert issued for India, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand and Bangladesh was later cancelled by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center of the US National Weather Service.

"Sea level readings indicate that a significant tsunami was not generated," the centre said.

The police control centre in Port Blair, the main town of India's Andaman Islands, said there were no immediate reports of any major damage or casualties.

The quake hit at 1:55 am (1955 GMT Monday) around 263 kilometres (163 miles) north of Port Blair, and was around 33 kilometres (20.2 miles) deep.

The Andamans were badly hit by the 2004 Asian tsunami which was triggered by an earthquake off the Indonesian island of Sumatra and sent giant waves crashing into countries around the Indian Ocean.

"It was very frightening. Everything started shaking and people were running out of their homes," said Mrinal Sarkar, a villager in Diglipur in the northern Andamans.

Ashley Greene Scandal - Naked Photos

It looks like "Twilight" star Ashley Greene is the latest starlet caught up in a nude-photo scandal. After Perez Hilton posted naked pictures that appeared to be of Greene, her rep stepped in and released a statement.

"The photos in question, which appear to be of our client, are illegal and are being unlawfully displayed," her rep told MTV News in a statement Monday (August 10). "Our client intends to take legal action."

Although the statement doesn't confirm whether the photos are of Greene, they have since been taken off Perez Hilton's Web site and replaced with the following statement: "The nude images have been removed from PerezHilton.com at the request of Greene's attorneys."

Greene made a splash at the Teen Choice Awards, where the "Twilight" crew won 11 awards. Greene was singled out as Choice Fresh Face Female and called her win "incredible."

Before the photos hit the Web, everyone was talking about another picture of Greene apparently kissing "Gossip Girl" star Chace Crawford. TMZ reported that the pair had been hanging out for a while, but up until the picture, taken early Monday, had kept the relationship on the down low.

At the Teen Choice Awards, it was another starlet who was making all the headlines for her photo scandal, after comedian Dane Cook poked fun at Vanessa Hudgens for her photos leaked last week, as well as in 2007. Longtime television producer Kathy Wetherell was killed in a car accident on Dec. 20 in Arizona. She was 48.

Wetherell's vehicle crashed head-on into a tour bus early Saturday morning east of Wickenburg on State Route 74, according to Arizona TV station ABC 15.

Officials believe the Cal State Fullerton graduate may have been trying to avoid an animal when she veered into the path of the bus.

Police have arrested a 23-year-old New Jersey man in connection with Saturday morning's hit-and-run death of two-time "American Idol" contestant Alexis Cohen. The Asbury Park Journal reports that Daniel Bark was arrested at 6 p.m. on Sunday and charged with causing Cohen's death by reckless driving and then leaving the scene of a collision.

Cohen, 25, the defiant blonde who auditioned for "Idol" in seasons seven and eight, became a fan favorite thanks to her clashes with judge Simon Cowell, who referred to her as the "Green Goblin" after her first high-energy auditions. Proudly proclaiming that she marched "to the beat of a different drummer," the Allentown, Pennsylvania native who shared a studio apartment with her mom didn't impress with her cover of Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love" in 2007. Steve McNair's funeral was held today in Hattiesburg, Miss. at the Reed Green Coliseum on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi. Steve McNair's funeral was one of the largest in Mississippi history, according to the AP. An estimated 4,500 fans, friends and family came to say goodbye and bay their respects to Steve McNair.

A hearse carrying Steve McNair's caskets was escorted by police officers down the highway. McNair's wife Mechelle, and his mother, Lucille were escorted into the funeral by police.

The Titans quarterback Vince Young said "Steve was like a hero to me, and heroes are not supposed to die,"

Baltimore linebacker Ray Lewis said "I find myself in awe when I speak about a man like Steve McNair,"

Brett Johnson, a native of Fort Worth who worked as a reporter for NBC Channel 5 television for the past 13 years, died Sunday. He was 48.

Mr. Johnson died at Baylor All Saints Hospital, where he was admitted Wednesday after complaining of stomach pain, NBC 5 reported. He was diagnosed with pancreatitis, which led to other complications, his family told the station.

As a reporter, he covered everything from hurricanes to crime, but feature stories, especially anything related to music, were his forte, NBC 5 reported. Homegrown Texas artists were his favorites. - Reported on Star-Telegram

Jasmin Ouschan raised her pool cue and smiled broadly after beating Kelly Fisher in the Great Lakes Classic 9-ball tourney final Sunday.

It was the most emotion underdog Ouschan showed all day in earning her third Women's Professional Billiard Association title. The blonde native of Austria joined the pro tour in 2007.

She took advantage of Fisher's break in Game 2 to sink a 2-9 combo for a quick 2-0 lead then went up 4-1 and cruised 7-2. Game 2 lasted about one minute.

"When I was up 6-2 I felt victory was close," grinned Ouschan. "All the pressure was off at the end."

Former skating champ Nicole Bobek has been charged. She has been busted on drug charges. Nicole Bobek is 31 years old and she made her first appearance in court on Monday regarding the drug bust. Basically, Nicole is from Jersey but last week she was arrested from Florida. In Hudson County. she was trying to sell the drugs. We have often saw cases, in which athletes used drugs to enhance their performance level but now athletes are sell drugs for recreational purposes as well.

Nicole Bobek represents her country and was a professional athlete but now she has been charged and believed to be a part of a New Jersey meth drug ring. Houston Car Chase

A high-speed chase, involving a white van and local police, just took place across the freeways and byways of Houston, Texas. The pursuit, which took place over an hour in two different counties and twenty-five miles, ended in a parking garage in the northern part of the city, where police cars surrounded the van.

However, that was not the end of the chase, as the suspect then ran to the top of the garage, at which point he was stopped at gun point by the local authorities. Modesto native Harve Presnell, a stage and screen actor whose booming baritone graced such Broadway musicals as "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" and "Annie," died Tuesday of pancreatic cancer at the age of 75.

Penguins Signs Mike Rupp

Mike Rupp has signed with the Stanley Cup champions.

The physical forward agreed to a two-year, $1.65 million contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins Wednesday. A native of Cleveland, Rupp will be playing close to old stomping grounds and only an hour and a half from his offseason home.

"It is ironic. It wasn't planned that way, but it is obviously a bonus," Rupp told me. "That organization is on top of the hockey world and built to have a good chance at staying there. I want to be part of that team and contribute to that team."

The funeral for actress Farrah Fawcett was held in Los Angeles this afternoon. Her long time partner Ryan O’Neal was one of nine pallbearer who helped to carry the flower laden casket. He and Farrah’s long time friend Alana Stewart entered the church together, both wearing black.

Redmond O’Neal was able to the attend the 4:00 p.m. service at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church after receiving a three hour pass from Judge Jane Godfrey. He was dressed in a suit and wore dark sunglasses.

The couple’s son has been incarcerated at Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic since April 5, 2009, undergoing intensive treatment for drug addiction, as ordered by the court. 29 June - Outage for Rackspace Customers

Many sites hosted at Rackspace Hosting were offline for about 45 minutes this afternoon when the company’s data center in Grapevine, Texas lost power. Rackspace reported at 4:30 p.m. Eastern that it was “having an issue that is affecting part of our DFW data center.”

At just after 5 p.m. Rackspace reported via its Twitter account that “all power is restored to the DFW data center. Power is restored and currently stable.” The company said it was continuing to manually bring up servers that did not restart properly when power was restored. Some sites that had SSL encryption enabled were also experiencing delays in being returned to service, according to a status update at The Rackspace Cloud. As of 6:30 p.m. Eastern the Grapevine data center was running on a combination of generator and utility power.

Rackspace’s Robert Scoble described the issue as a “major outage.” “There is nothing worse than having our customers be down,” he wrote. ” Hundreds of people are working on getting all systems back up and running.”

The DFW data center is the company’s largest facility, with 144,000 square feet of space. The facilty in Grapevine figured into a 2007 power outage that interrupted service for many prominent web sites. In that incident, a vehicle struck a power transformer, and public safety officials turned off both the facility’s power feeds during their emergency rescue operations.

The downtime was noted at TechCrunch and on Twitter. I’ll admit to being surprised that Justin Timberlake was so knowledgable abut the hosting industry. - Rich Miller
