Faces of Meth

A Taylor couple recently admitted to purchasing 8 ounces of methamphetamine every day to sell in the community in smaller quantities.

Agents with the federal Drug Enforcement Agency filed a two-count felony indictment last week against Jason Linwood Slaughter, 28, and his girlfriend, Charla Deanna Thomas, 28, charging them with possession with intent to distribute more than 50 grams of meth and using a pistol during a drug trafficking crime.

Local authorities originally arrested the couple during a traffic stop on Alabama Highway 52 in Taylor on May 17. Jason Slaughter’s mother, Patricia Slaughter, principal of Honeysuckle Middle School, was also charged with two misdemeanor crimes on the same day, but she does not face any federal charges.

Patricia Slaughter, 58, was placed on administrative leave after her arrest.

The following happened as part of the federal investigation, according to court records:

A Dothan police investigator on the DEA Task Force filed the federal charges against the couple as the result of a traffic stop made by a Taylor police officer. The officer stopped a Lincoln Navigator driven by Jason Slaughter after he saw only a piece of paper in the vehicle’s window, instead of a license plate. After the officer attempted to the stop the vehicle, Slaughter continued to drive until he pulled into the driveway of his home in the 5300 block of Highway 52.

Slaughter told police he had been in the process of buying the vehicle, and showed a contract to the officer. Slaughter denied having anything illegal inside the vehicle, and did not give police consent to search it. Police searched Slaughter and found a cell phone and $2,000 cash on him, which Slaughter said was down payment for the vehicle.

A Dothan police K-9 alerted on the vehicle, an indicator of illegal drugs. Police used a tool to enter the vehicle after the couple denied having keys to get inside. Police seized a police scanner, a .22-caliber pistol and 4 ounces of meth from the console of the vehicle. They also seized a backpack from the back seat with 2 ounces of meth, electronic scales, several pills and $200 cash inside it.

During an interview, Thomas admitted to throwing the keys to the vehicle inside the home to keep officers from searching it. Both Slaughter and Thomas also admitted they had been buying about 8 ounces of meth every day and selling it in smaller quantities. Later in the interview, Slaughter threw the tape recorder used by investigators against the wall after he realized he was being arrested.

Police also seized an “Uzi” type pistol, along with several other guns from Patricia Slaughter’s home after they served a search warrant at the residence. Jason Slaughter lived at his mother’s home.

Local authorities also charged the couple in March with unlawful possession of meth. During the same incident in March, authorities also charged Jason Slaughter with first-degree receiving stolen property and possession of an altered firearm after they seized 11 rifles, four pistols and some body armor from the same home.
